A TRANSCONTINENTAL CRIB

Vanderbilt senior Olivia’s room is a little bit Moroccan, a little bit Spanish, a little bit DIY and a lot chic. Olivia is a Spanish and European Studies major – she spent the last two summers interning and studying in Barcelona – and her room is full of pretty little things she’s picked up here and there in her travels (and her attic). We are IN LOVE with her canopy bed too. (Olivia, pick us up some goodies next time you’re in Barca?…)

What three words would you use to describe the atmosphere of your room? Moroccan, peaceful, eclectic (at least I think!)

What is the inspiration behind your Spanish flag, map, and canvases? The Spanish flag I have because I am in love with Spain. I actually found that in the attic of my house. My mom said she had that hanging on her wall when she was my age and living in Spain. I like it because it is not your typical flag… it has character. The map is of Barcelona and I bought this summer while I was living there. The canvases I painted myself. One is my favorite quote and the other is the lyrics to one of my favorite Italian songs. The one on my dresser, one of my best friends just sent me, I love it!

Your use of tapestries throughout your room is so unique. Where did you find them? I love tapestries! I bought the one on my dresser  at a cool store in downtown Nashville. The other one I actually got in Spain and wore it as a skirt  but I thought it looked better on my shelf!

How did you find the old shutters on your walls? Did you paint them yourself?  I have to give all the credit to my Dad on this one! All of those amazing wall hangings came from his shop. He is a builder and has an amazing little workshop with so many of these vintage shutters and windows that he never used. I left them all untouched except for the one on my bed. I painted it that turquoise color because I love the combination of the red on my bed/ tapestries with it.

What do you like best about your room?  My favorite part of my room is definitely my canopy bed… It is my dream bed and I still can’t believe I have it. I love the carvings on the wood… it reminds me of something you would find in Egypt.
